Warm Welcome and Pie
When the warm seasons return to the prairies I'm reminded of the words of an old, much-travelled friend; now that our commodities are getting more attention than wheat, maybe it's time our varied landscapes did, too; it's about "our'' lake and a state of mind; don't forget to check out the events surrounding the 125th anniversary of the 1885 Rebellion/Resistance; and, free virtual saskatoon berry pie for all who know "Saskatchewan'' ends with "win'' not "won.'' Go Riders!

Saskatoon Nightlife
A hot economy is tranforming
There's fun after dark in lively Saskatoon
There's big fun after dark in lively Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan into a bountiful province with lots of opportunities for fun. Deeper pockets are keeping restaurants busy and adding new vitality to evening entertainment scenes. Saskatoon, the largest city in the province, is experiencing its fair share of this new energy, which is bolstering business at existing clubs and generating a few new ones, too. Kira Yanko, somewhat of an authority on Saskatoon nightlife—especially that which emanates from the popular Broadway area—right here offers some well-earned insights into several of the most popular night spots in Saskatoon. If you're going to be visiting soon, take note. And let the good times roll.

Big Bert
Imagine encountering a 7.6-metre (25-ft) crocodile in Saskatchewan. Fortunately, we no longer have to worry about such chance meetings—crocs disappeared from here millions of years ago. Well, the living ones did, anyway. "Big Bert'', the most complete fossilized remains of a Terminonaris crocodile, was discovered near Carrot River in 1991. Our Spring 2006 efforts to visit the rich fossil quarry where Bert was discovered were stymied by flooding. Waters are high again this year. Good thing delightful little Pasqui Regional Park is on high ground.

Pious
In 1899, 7,400 Doukhobors left Russia for what's now Saskatchewan. Their new country offered them freedom of religion, land, and the pacifist lifestyle that underpinned their belief in universal brotherhood. And for a while, with some help from friends like Leo Tolstoy and the Quakers, the Doukhobors flourished in rural Saskatchewan.

Wizard o' Wheat
Seager Wheeler came to the area we now call Saskatchewan in 1885, the same year the North West Rebellion shook a young nation called Canada. By the time Wheeler died in 1961, this remarkable farmer and innovator had won an unparalleled five international wheat-growing championships and earned a name as one of the most influential farmers in Western Canadian history. His Maple Grove Farm, 40 minutes northeast of Saskatoon, remembers Wheeler and his varied accomplishments.
